Mountaintops & Waterfalls in Marvelous Marquette Michigan Camping Video

This camping music video is of a trip my son Bryce and I took to Marquette Michigan Camping in Upper Peninsula for some camping, hiking and waterfalling in August. We started in Marquette Michigan which is not only Michigan's largest city, but also is the gateway to The Huron Mountains. The city offers a great base camp for exploring this area's secluded Lake Superior beaches, mountaintop vistas and cascading waterfalls. During our three days visit, we hiked 1.2 miles to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain and 5.2 miles to the top of Hogback Mountain. Both mountains offer great views of the Huron Mountains and Lake Superior. I actually climbed Sugarloaf twice; once to catch the sunrise while Bryce slept and a second time with Bryce after his beauty sleep.

We also drove the scenic drive to watch the sunset from Presque Isle Park and my Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk also got some miles of forest service roads under its tires when we visited the Carp River and Yellow Dog River waterfalls. In one case, Google Maps took us really close to Carp Falls, quite different and easier than the online instructions on www.gowaterfalling.com. However, with Yellow Dog Falls we tried using our Jeep's onboard GPS so we wouldn't be internet dependent in the backwoods. Well it took us way out of our way and I don't think we would have ever got close to the falls. Gowaterfalling.com actually had very clear and easy instructions of how to visit Yellow Dog Falls. If we had paid closer attention to the website's directions, we wouldn't have really needed the Jeep's GPS or Google Maps driving directions.

Bryce and I stayed at the Marquette Tourist Park on the north side of town which is a 40 acre park on the Dead River Reservoir. They have mixed camping accommodations with about 72 electric only sites, 38 with electric/water/sewer service sites and about 10 rustic tenting sites on the lakefront. We had a full hookup site, and it was nice to be able to take showers in our Yellow Winnebago Drop camper after hiking all day. It was an excellent basecamp for exploring the natural areas north of town. However, it is the edge of the city so it isn't the most outback experience and I was woken by the train going through in the middle of the night. I'd stay there again though because of its easy access to both downtown Marquette and the surrounding natural areas.

The song playing during this video is "Ashes" by my daughter Aspen Jacobsen. It was written during the Wheatland Music Organization's Traditional Arts Weekend Songwriter Challenge several years ago. Aspen was given three words at random (ashes, detesting and beep) by challenge organizer Rick Novak. This is the song that came out of that challenge. Unfortunately, Rick passed away earlier this year. Consequently, we are dedicating this video to his memory.
